The Australia Day Black Tie Gala, hosted by the American Australian Association, and supported by G'DAY USA is a celebration of Australia in the United States and is held to commemorate Australia Day.  It provides a unique opportunity for individuals and corporations to conduct high level business networking, to celebrate the Australian American partnership and to cultivate new and long standing relationships.   The Association will recognize and honor the achievements of a prominent Australian personality as part of the Australia Day celebrations.  

Past Honorees have included Gordon Elliott, Ian Thorpe OAM, Robert Thomson, Julie Anne Quay & Malcolm Carfrae; Michael Ware, Coopers Brewery, Darren Thomas, David Droga and Anthony Pratt amongst others.

Attendees will enjoy an evening of expertly crafted Australian food, wine and high profile entertainment.


The 2017 American Australian Association Australia Day Black Tie Gala, presented by National Australia Bank, was held on Friday, January 20 in the grand ballroom of Cipriani Wall Street. The evening celebrated the next generation of Australian leaders – Marita Cheng, Founder & CEO of Aubot and Robogals Global; and Ben Lowy, theatre producer, investor, and co-founder of The Lowy Salpeter Company. Around 400 guests attended this glamorous event, including guest speakers the Hon Kevin Rudd, Hon Craig Laundy (Assistant Minister for Industry, Innovation & Science); and Shazza – an authentic Aussie robot.

MC and actress - Amanda Bishop; original Hamilton cast member - Sydney James Harcourt; the high octane singing, dancing vocalists – THE Aussie Boys, and DJ Jamo Willo kept the crowd entertained and on the dance floor throughout the night.

The 2016 American Australian Association Australia Day Black Tie Gala presented by National Australia Bank and supported by G'Day USA was held on Friday, January 22 in the grand ballroom of Cipriani Wall Street. A celebration of Australia Day and Australia in the United States, over 400 guests attended this glamorous event, including special guests the Hon Julie Bishop MP; Honoree Gordon Elliott CEO of Follow Productions; vocalist, actress and TV personality, Marcia Hines AM; chef and media personality Mario Batali; Master of Ceremonies, actor and TV host Nick Hardcastle; indie pop musician Georgi Kay; and Broadway performer Amelia Cormack.

On Friday 23 January, the grand ballroom of Cipriani Wall Street was host to the American Australian Association’s Australia Day Black Tie Gala, presented by National Australia Bank. The evening was a celebration of Australia Day and Australia in the United States with over 400 guests attending, including special guests the Hon. Julie Bishop and Australian athlete and philanthropist Ian Thorpe OAM.

Ian Thorpe, who was recognized at the event for his extraordinary contribution to sport and philanthropy, gave guests an insight into his Olympic experiences and friendly competition with his American rivals in the pool. The Master of Ceremonies, Australian actor and television host Nick Hardcastle, lead the entertainment which featured Broadway performer Kaye Tuckerman, opera singer Rachelle Durkin and pianist Danny Lincoln.

The American Australian Association partnered with G’DAY USA on Friday 24 January to hold the 2014 Black Tie Gala at Cipriani Wall Street, presented by National Australia Bank. Over 600 guests attended the evening which celebrated Australia Day and promoted Australia in the United States through an evening of Australian food, wine and entertainment. One of Australia’s leading didgeridoo players and composers, William Barton, and singer Paulini were amongst the entertainment. Three high-achieving Australians were recognized as part of the evening. Robert Thomson was honored for his significant contribution to journalism, along with Julie Anne Quay and Malcom Carfrae who are international ambassadors for Australian fashion.

The 2013 American Australian Association & G’DAY USA Black Tie Gala was held on Friday 18 January in the grand ballroom of Cipriani Wall Street, presented by National Australia Bank and Jacob’s Creek. Honorees for the evening included Michael Ware, president and CEO of Penance Films and TV and Coopers Brewery, Australia’s largest Australian owned brewery. Over 500 guests attended and enjoyed an expertly crafted menu by celebrity chef Guy Grossi and entertainment by musical theater star, David Campbell and singer/songwriter, Jessica Mauboy.


Over 600 people gathered at Cipriani Wall Street on Friday 20th January for the annual American Australian Association and G’DAY USA Black Tie Gala, presented by National Australia Bank. Special guests included Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer, The Hon Wayne Swan MP; Australian Ambassador to the United States, The Hon Kim Beazley, AC; Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer, Hon David Bradbury MP; Australian Carbon Trust Chair, Robert Hill; and Former United States Ambassador to Australia, Robert McCallum Jr. Guests enjoyed a Cocktail Reception at the Museum of American Finance before crossing to Cipriani Wall Street for a three-course dinner prepared by Australian celebrity chef, Pete Evans. The crowd was wowed by the voices of the Qantas Choir; Australia’s Got Talent winner, Jack Vidgen; Master of Ceremonies, Jamie Durie; and multi-platinum selling artist, Guy Sebastian.

The spotlight of the evening was on the two honorees, Darren Thomas of T & R Pastoral and David Droga of Droga5: two inspirational Australians who have accomplished significant achievements in the United States. Each was presented with an award and gave gracious acceptance speeches. 



On Friday 28 January, more than 700 guests gathered at a snowy Cipriani Wall Street for the American Australian Association and G’DAY USA Black Tie Gala. Australian notables included Anthony Pratt, Jeanne Pratt, Ambassador Kim Beazley, Ambassador Jeffrey Bleich, The Hon. John Olsen, AO, Wally Mariani of QANTAS, Soloman Lew, The Hon. Ms. Michelle O'Byrne - Tasmanian Minister of Tourism, The Hon Kevin Foley - South Australian Treasurer and Congressman Jerry Nadler.

Private receptions for the Black Tie Gala were graciously hosted by National Australia Bank and Pratt Industries. The evening’s menu featured Australian gourmet dishes from renowned chef Guy Grossi.

Guests were entertained by Television personality and MC Rove McManus, and a spectacular performance by cast members from Priscilla Queen of the Desert, and the Qantas Choir and David Campbell singing “I still call Australia home. Anthony Pratt was honored for his outstanding leadership in sustainable manufacturing in the United States.



On Friday 22nd January, over 500 people gathered at Cipriani Wall Street for the Association's Australia Day Black Tie Gala. Guests included Australian Minister for Resources and Energy and Minister for Tourism, the Hon Martin Ferguson AM MP; New York Consul-General, Phil Scanlan AM; and former Permanent Representative to the United Nations for Australia, Robert Hill.

MiG Ayesa began proceedings by performing the national anthems for Australia and the United States. After introductory remarks from Association Chairman Malcolm Binks and President Frances Cassidy, the evening's entertainment began with Caroline O'Connor's energetic performance that set the mood for the rest of the evening. The dance floor filled quickly when headlining guests Human Nature took to the stage performing Motown classics.

Later in the evening, there was much excitement at the drawing of the Qantas raffle and awaiting the winning 'key' opening of the Canturi jewelry case. Stefano Canturi designed a $15,000 diamond pendant especially for the Australia Day Gala. Enjoying the celebratory nature of the evening and with the decadent three course meal ended, the dance floor again became filled with guests dancing the night away. The Hank Lane band played a few Australian hits that the audience enjoyed immensely.



The Gala for 2009 was held at the historic Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Friday 23rd January.  The evening commenced with a red carpet arrival and cocktail reception, followed by a unique dinner experience, then dancing.

Baz Luhrmann was honored for his outstanding contributions to the arts, and in particular his most recent film, Australia. Leading star from the film, Nicole Kidman, presented the award and joined us in celebrating his achievements. Actress and vocalist Ursula Yovich (who played Daisy in the movie Australia) performed a medley of songs from the movies of Baz Luhrmann.

The Gala also profiled the exceptional work of the Australian Surf Lifesavers. Proceeds from the Gala went directly to the Surf Life Saving Foundation for the benefit of Surf Life Saving Australia.

Australian celebrity chef Luke Mangan crafted the menu for 1,000 attendees, including prominent Australian and American arts, philanthropic, government and business executives.



The 2008 Australia Day Black Tie Gala dinner was held at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Saturday 26th January. The sold-out event attracted 1200 attendees and featured a strong Australian cultural and culinary flavor. Actor Julian McMahon was honored for Excellence in Entertainment. There were also performances by Shannon Noll, Christine Anu, The Pembroke Symphony Orchestra, 'Etype Jazz', the Qantas Girls’ Choir and Richard Walley OAM.




The 2007 Black Tie Gala was held on Friday 19th January at one of New York's most stunning venues, Cipriani Wall Street. Multi-Grammy-award winning singer, Olivia Newton-John, was honored alongside Australian fashion designer Collette Dinnigan. Hugh Jackman was a surprise guest.

Ms. Newton-John performed an exclusive concert as part of the evening's festivities. There were also performances by 'Etypejazz', winners of the past two Australian Live Music Awards, the indigenous dance group, The Bardi Dancers, and the Qantas Girls’ Choir. Other notable guests included: Deborra-Lee Furness, Actress and Film Maker; The Wiggles, an Australian children's group; and Ms Terri Irwin, Australian Tourism Ambassador.
